Round 1 - 1995 /96NORTHUMBRIA COMMUNITY SAFETY The scheme supported a new partnership between Northumbria Police, six local authorities and the private sector to establish a force-wide structure to develop and deliver a co-ordinated strategy to tackle a range of community safety issues. It acted as a "test-bed" for initiatives to help determine priorities for local groups (e.g. drug misuse). Costs: SRB Total £0.93m TYNESIDE BUSINESS Costs: SRB Total £3.3m TYNESIDE EDUCATION BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS Costs: SRB Total £1.48m Round 2 - 1996 / 97TACKLING THE FEAR OF CRIME, NORTHUMBRIA COMMUNITY SAFETY STRATEGY A seven-year co-ordinated programme of measures involving crime detection and target-hardening, community development and support, education and training. Projects will operate through local groups in discrete geographically based areas within the six partners' local authorities - linking into other activities (City Challenge, Safer Cities etc). Key Outputs: 83 jobs created/safeguarded; 3,400 pupils benefiting from projects designed to enhance/improve attainment; 35,9686 people benefiting from community safety initiatives; 7,902 dwellings where security is upgraded. Costs: SRB Total: £10.6m Scheme Total: £23m Partnership contact: George Snaith Round 4 - 1998/99TACKLING YOUTH CRIME, NORTHUMBERLAND AND TYNE AND WEAR The three-year scheme's primary objective is to tackle crime and improve community safety. The scheme will be run through the police and piloted in Sunderland in the first instance. Key elements of the bid are the Focused Cautioning Scheme; Family Group Conference and the Northern Business Forum Mentoring Project involving middle and senior management teams of the regions business organisations. Key Outputs: 11 jobs created; 100 pupils benefiting from projects designed to enhance/improve attainment; 930 young people benefiting from projects to promote social and personal development. Round 5 - 1999/00GENERATING AND EMBEDDING AN INNOVATION CULTURE IN THE NORTH EAST (GENERIC) The three key strands of this five-year scheme are: - (1) to improve awareness and understanding of the importance of innovation and wealth creation; (2) support enterprise and the creation of new businesses and (3) improve the capacity of existing SME's for innovation and absorbing technological change.
