Completion of a major investment programme for the regeneration of the Bessemer Park estate in Sedgefield. CONSETT SOUTHERN AREA
A five-year package of training, community safety and environmental measures aimed at ensuring local people benefit from related economic regeneration efforts in the town through a wide-ranging partnership involving public, private, voluntary and community organisations. EAST DURHAM REGENERATION
The scheme offers seven years support towards a regeneration strategy for the East Durham coalfield area which involves education, training and enterprise development across Easington District, with particular focus on environmental improvements and job creation and business support measures in Seaham and Murton. Key Outputs: 51.4 jobs created/safeguarded; 500 new business starts; 10.66 hectares land improved/reclaimed for open space.

REGENERATION FOR COUNTY DURHAM
Support towards a five-year, countywide programme aimed at stimulating small business start up/growth and improvement of educational attainment. The programme builds on previous best practice and includes personal development activities, training opportunities and business support measures. Funding ceased in March 1998 for seven of the scheme's projects but will continue for the Business Education Partnership Programme until March 2000. Key Outputs: 1,519 jobs created; 10,848 training weeks; 1,200 new businesses; 87,000 pupils benefiting from projects; 183 people trained obtaining qualifications.

ROUND 2 - 1996/97
SHERBURN ROAD REGENERATION INITIATIVE
A seven-year scheme to address deep-rooted problems of high levels of unemployment, poverty, crime, intimidation and violence on a Durham housing estate. This comprehensive strategy aims to introduce significant change of tenure, reduce crime and provide new training and employment opportunities. Links with Objective 2, County Durham Economic Development Strategy, County Durham Community Safety Strategy, Drugs Action Team. Key Outputs: 150 people training obtaining qualifications; 60 private sector dwellings completed; 20 community safety initiatives.

ROUND 3 - 1997/98
COUNTY DURHAM PARTNERSHIP BID FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
A seven-year scheme to tackle poor parenting, anti-social behaviour, criminality and low educational attainment targeting young people in key primary and secondary schools in the most needy parts of the county. Activities include out of school hours educational support, new and additional learning opportunities for disaffected youngsters, family literacy, positive parenting and the creation of a young people's council. Key Outputs: 22 jobs created; 2,412 pupils whose attainment is measurably enhanced/improved; 306 people trained obtaining qualifications; 10,676 young people benefiting from projects to promote personal and social development; 25 voluntary organisations supported.

A five-year scheme led by Darlington BC to improve housing conditions and employment opportunities for local residents of Skerne Park Estate. Key features include tenure diversification, community safety, housing and environmental improvements and the development of a Community Enterprise Association. Key Outputs: 227 LA dwellings improved; 44 dwellings transferred to HA for improvement; 25 jobs created/safeguarded; 2 new business start-ups.

SHILDON: SUSTAINING A COMMUNITY
A six-year scheme led by Sedgefield District Council on behalf of the Shildon Partnership. A well-targeted scheme focused on the town centre and two wards with high levels of deprivation, fear of crime and low academic attainment. Effective links with local housing strategy and proposals improving education and skill levels. Key Outputs: 158 jobs safeguarded; 880 people trained obtaining qualifications; 1,080m² new business/commercial floorspace; 600 local authority and 430 private sector dwellings improved; 6000 people benefiting from community safety.

SOUTH BISHOP AUCKLAND REGENERATION PARTNERSHIP
A five-year scheme led by Wear Valley District Council. The integrated package of training, physical infrastructure, environmental and social projects, have been developed by a partnership of community and public bodies in response to severe problems of high unemployment, lack of employment skills, crime and fear of crime and the lack of facilities, particularly for disadvantaged young people. Key elements include an education and vocational training programme; improved access to the St Helen's industrial estate and a new development site at Fieldon Bridge; environmental improvements to council estates; development of an integrated community safety strategy; and the provision of a base for community economic development. Key Outputs: 85 jobs created or preserved; 300 pupils benefiting from projects designed to enhance/improve attainment; 487 people trained obtaining qualifications; 6 hectares of land improved for development; 8.2 hectares improved open space.

TACKLING DRUGS
This was a two-year pilot scheme led by Durham Probation Service. It aimed to make a major contribution to community safety by providing effective services for serious drug offenders. It provided innovative programmes for offenders in order to reduce crime related to the possession and supply of drugs and the financing of continuing drug use. This involved intensive community supervision, group work in community and prison settings and sports and fitness counselling. The project also provided training and professional support to others working in the criminal justice system to improve their own services to drug offenders.

EAST DURHAM VILLAGES CONSORTIUM
This four-year scheme utilises a "bottom up" approach to introduce a community capacity-building scheme in a coalfield task force area. Initiatives to combat social exclusion; crime; drugs; improve education; health, and; childcare are also included in the scheme. Key Outputs: 18 jobs created/safeguarded; 250 people trained and obtaining qualifications; 600 people given access to new cultural facilities.

INTEGRATED REGENERATION IN COUNTY DURHAM AND DARLINGTON
A seven-year scheme aiming to tackle the problems associated with the decline in the Durham Coalfield, rural areas in Co Durham, recent factory closures and those areas displaying high levels of need. Key outputs: 2,259 jobs created; 4,282 pupils benefiting from projects; 473 new business start-ups; 198 voluntary groups supported; 388 community groups supported; 363 capacity building initiatives.

WORKING TOGETHER FOR TOURISM IN RURAL UPPER TEESDALE
A three-year scheme focusing on the development of tourism to build a sustainable community. It aims to address the decline in farm incomes, which has led to considerable disadvantage in the Upper Teesdale area. Key outputs: 4.5 jobs created; 50 jobs safeguarded; 70 businesses advised; 289,000 people given access to new community and cultural opportunities/facilities; 10 capacity building initiatives carried out.
