CAUTIONING SUPPORT PROGRAMME
A five-year voluntary sector-led scheme operating across Teesside, involving the Police, Probation Service and representatives from the four Local Authorities and others, on a programme targeted at young offenders (and their families), to deter them from re-offending.

Key Outputs: 550,000 beneficiaries of community safety initiatives.

CENTRE OF MANUFACTURING EXCELLENCE (EPICC)
A seven-year private sector-led scheme to establish a centre of excellence for process industries which will be recognised throughout Europe. Partners include University of Teesside, British Steel, ICI, Teesside TEC and local authorities. It provides industrial services, high level training and education, collaborative research and development and the dissemination of best practice to improve performance, competitiveness and innovation.

Key Outputs: 250 jobs created; 3,000 trained people obtaining qualifications; 10,000 training weeks.

GRANGETOWN PARTNERSHIP
A five-year integrated small area regeneration project that will complete the regeneration of the Grangetown residential area of Redcar and Cleveland, which began in 1990. The package includes housing improvement, training and employment initiatives along with environmental and community safety initiatives. Partners include the Grangetown Community, Tees Valley Tomorrow Ltd, Tees Valley TEC, the Police, Guinness Trust and Housing Associations.

Key Outputs: 217 jobs created/safeguarded; 370 trained people obtaining qualification; 30 private dwellings completed; 155 local authority dwellings improved; 57 housing association dwellings improved/completed.

MIDDLESBROUGH PRIDE AND ENTERPRISE
The scheme offers seven-year support for three important economic elements within a comprehensive town regeneration strategy. It includes major improvements to the Linthorpe/Ayresome area; provision of a new and improved community facility; a new multi-media exchange and an Initiative centre at Hemlington providing employment and training opportunities.

Key Outputs: 234 jobs created/safeguarded; 600 people trained obtaining qualifications; 15 buildings improved and brought back into use.

NEW ENTERPRISE STRATEGY FOR TEESSIDE
The scheme was led by Teesside TEC and provided a flexible support programme that included grants, loans and business advice to stimulate new business formation on Teesside. The programme was delivered through Business Link and was designed to increase job creation and enhance employment opportunities.

Scheme ended in 1998.


PROMOTING ACHIEVEMENT IN EDUCATION
The scheme supported a joint Cleveland County Council/Teesside TEC county-wide strategy to improve the educational achievement of young people through improving basic literacy and numeracy and developing links between education and industry.

Scheme ended in 1998.


TILERY PROJECT, STOCKTON
The scheme completed the regeneration of the Tilery Estate in Stockton, which was a City Challenge/Estate Action flagship scheme. It included housing refurbishment linked closely to a range of community and environment initiatives and traffic calming measures.

Scheme ended in 1998.


WORKING WORD
The project was aimed at helping ethnic minority groups overcome disadvantage. It included measures to teach English as a second language, improvement of education attainment targets and increasing participation by adults in training, education and employment.

THE HARDWICK REGENERATION PARTNERSHIP PROJECT,
STOCKTON ON TEES
This is a voluntary sector-led, six-year scheme concentrating on Hardwick (target population 13,000), an area that is geographically isolated from Stockton Town centre and suffers high levels of deprivation. The aim is to create a locally based learning and enterprise culture. The community is supported by the private sector, Teesside TEC, churches, police, and the local authority,

Key Outputs: 61 jobs created/safeguarded; 6,375 pupils benefiting from projects designed to enhance/improve attainment; 796 people trained obtaining qualifications; 24 new business start-ups; 271 residents obtaining employment.

OWTON/ROSSMERE PARTNERSHIP, HARTLEPOOL
A seven-year scheme with a sustainable strategy for regeneration. The foundation of the scheme is a major joint venture between English Partnerships and a private developer to develop redundant British Steel land into a high quality business park in a prime location to link with the large inward investment made in the area by Samsung. Training and business support measures will target local companies and residents, with complementary programme of industrial estate, environmental, security and housing improvement.

Key Outputs: 570 jobs created, 1,145 people trained obtaining qualifications; 2,321 local authority dwellings improved; 2 hectares of land improved/ reclaimed/ serviced for development, 4000m2 of improved business space.

RAGWORTH REGENERATION PROJECT, STOCKTON ON TEES
A four-year sustainable regeneration strategy that will complete the regeneration of three priority areas of North Stockton. The scheme will provide an attractive place to live, in which family life can flourish in a supportive community; and a crime free environment where residents can realise their own potential. Focusing particularly on raising standard in local primary schools and attracting housing investment.

Key Outputs: 60 jobs created/safeguarded; 2,400 pupils benefiting from projects designed to enhance/improve attainment; 16 Youth crime prevention initiatives; 138 private sector and 55 Housing Association dwellings completed.

SAFE IN TEESSIDE, TEESIDE TOMORROW
Merged with Maintaining the Momentum, Get A Life and Addressing the Housing Needs of Ex-offenders A six-year scheme which forms the first, strategically-based response to crime and community safety in an area which has the fourth highest crime rate in England and Wales. It will include the promotion of a collaborative approach to security on targeted industrial estates, support for active citizenship, a programme to access employment for ex-offenders, and a co-ordinated drug prevention initiative.

Key Outputs: 1020 businesses advised; 132,145 beneficiaries of community safety initiatives; 460 commercial buildings where security is upgraded.

GROVE HILL 2000
A seven-year scheme which aims to change the nature and image of the area through a comprehensive range of community initiatives addressing social, economic and cultural issues. The scheme proposes the redevelopment of the Marton Grove area of Middlesbrough through diversification in housing tenure and stock; environmental improvements; a new community centre for training, employment, business development and health issues alongside a new sports hall and enhanced Youth and Community Centre; a series of youth initiatives; and the development of existing community safety initiatives.

Key Outputs: 350 residents obtaining qualifications; 175 residents getting jobs as a result of targeted assistance; 109 private sector dwellings completed; 108 local authority dwellings improved; 500 people benefiting from community safety initiatives.

STOCKTON: MILL LANE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP
A seven-year scheme focusing on improving the economic, educational and social well being of the local people. Additional teaching resources at Mill Lane Primary school and a Family Literacy Project will focus on achieving improved literacy and numeracy, while an employment advice link worker will provide outreach services in job information, application support and training advice and develop links with the Town Centre Business Forum. Additional community and youth workers will promote a wide range of training and adult education; self-employment and community enterprise initiatives; and health and safety initiatives.

STOCKTON TOWN CENTRE: COMPLETING THE CHALLENGE
A three-year scheme to address the issues of high levels of unemployment within the area; lack of investment opportunities on the riverside; underdeveloped links between the High Street and Teesdale; the poor image given by approach roads into the town centre; and the number of vacant and under-used shops. Key elements include the completion of the quayside development; the provision of a footbridge to link Teesdale with the High Street.

Key Outputs: 170 jobs created/safeguarded; 7,500 m2 of new/improved business/commercial floorspace; 5.4 hectares of land improved/ reclaimed/services for development; 36 buildings improved and brought back into use.

ADDRESSING THE HOUSING NEEDS OF EX OFFENDERS
Merged with Safe in Teesside The scheme offers four years of support for an innovative pilot based project to provide affordable housing for ex-offenders. Candidates will undergo a selection process, be given training and preparation, and will have to meet specific criteria prior to the offer of a tenancy.
